Should you pick a scab to get rid of it?

Is Vaseline good for getting rid of scabs?

Many dermatologists recommend Vaseline or petroleum jelly to keep the scab moist and help with healing. How To Use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) For Weight Loss (Evidence Based)

You may have heard that adding apple cider vinegar to your daily diet can help you lose weight and body fat. Apple cider vinegar is a cherished natural remedy with a lot of health benefits. In addition, scientific studies, as well as practical experiences, show that adding apple cider vinegar (ACV) to your diet can boost your weight loss efforts.

Apple cider vinegar is one of those substances that target the weight gain problem holistically, and it provides you with a long-term weight loss solution.

This article will help you understand how apple cider vinegar works to encourage weight loss and how to use ACV as part of your daily diet to lose weight and to improve your health.

In this article, I am going to look at what the research says about the connection between apple cider vinegar and weight loss.

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Help You Lose Weight?

The most interesting study on how apple cider vinegar helps with weight loss was published in 2009 in the Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry journal.

The study found that adding 2 tbsp. of vinegar (such as apple cider vinegar) to your diet for just three months can cause significant weight loss. According to the study, apple cider vinegar can also help you lose abdominal fat (belly fat), reduce waist circumference, and decrease blood triglycerides.

The bottom line is that you just need to consume 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar in your diet to help you lose weight and body fat.

How Does Apple Cider Vinegar Make You Lose Weight?

Apple cider vinegar is made from crushed apples, then distilled and fermented. The result is a liquid that is high in acetic acid.

Apple cider vinegar taps into several physiological mechanisms that support healthy weight loss:

1. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) acts as an appetite suppressor

Apple cider vinegar makes you eat less by producing a feeling of satiety sooner.

One research that proved that empirically was a 2005 study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Subjects who ate bread with vinegar felt significantly fuller than their counterparts who were fed only bread. The more acetic acid (the primary constituent of vinegar) the participants ingested, the fuller they were.

2. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) controls blood sugar levels to help suppress appetite

Apple cider vinegar prevents uncontrollable sugar spikes and crashes that make you want to nibble between meals. When your blood sugar is stable, it’s much easier to stick to your diet and eat only when your body needs it.

The previously mentioned study also measured blood sugar levels in the vinegar-fed and control group. Participants who were given ACV had significantly lower post-meal blood glucose levels (there was no spike that usually follows a meal high in carbohydrates). Furthermore, those who consumed a higher dose of vinegar, benefited from the effect even 90 minutes after eating. 3. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) prevents fat accumulation

Apple cider vinegar stimulates your metabolism and makes you burn fat faster. It contains a lot of organic acids and enzymes that speed up your metabolism and increase the rate at which body fat is burnt.

There aren’t many human studies that would support this explanation. A Japanese study published in 2009 was observing the effects of acetic acid on rats that were fed a diet high in fats. The scientist concluded that the consumption of acetic acid (which is found in ACV) suppressed fat accumulation. ACV can also help you to reduce cholesterol.

4. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has an impact on insulin secretion to reduce fat storage

Insulin affects fat storage. This hormone is closely linked to blood sugar levels and its secretion is disturbed in people suffering from type 2 diabetes. Scientists suggested that ACV might work in a similar way to some diabetic drugs and could have a potential in controlling diabetes. If you suffer from type 2 diabetes, make sure to consume these foods and these spices.

5. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) detoxifies the body and improves digestion

When our body gets rid of toxins, all the processes (including digestion and metabolism) become more efficient. ACV flushes the body and helps it use the nutrients from food in the best way possible. It is high in insoluble fiber that absorb toxins and improve bowel movement. What Type of Apple Cider Vinegar Should You Use for Losing Weight?

When using apple cider vinegar for weight loss, and to get the most health benefits, it’s important to get ACV that hasn’t been processed and is still in its “raw” form.

Use raw unprocessed apple cider vinegar to promote weight and fat loss

Raw unprocessed apple cider vinegar still contains the “mother” which is the cloudy bits that should be floating around the liquid, and retains many of the health benefits of ACV.

Use organic apple cider vinegar in your diet

Since apples are heavily sprayed with pesticides (apples were at the top of the list of the fruits and veggies with the most pesticides) you need to buy raw, unprocessed, unfiltered and organic apple cider vinegar to enjoy the full health benefits. You can also easily make your own ACV at home.

You can buy any brand of ACV to increase fat burning

Any brand of ACV that is unpasteurized, unfiltered and organic can be used for weight loss.

One of the most well-known organic ACV brands is Bragg which can be purchased online, in many supermarkets and health food stores. You don’t need to worry that the ACV is not pasteurized since the high acidity level is high enough to kill bacteria such as E.coli. But just remember that many doctors recommend pregnant women to avoid consuming any unpasteurized foods to reduce the risk of foodborne illness that could potentially harm the baby.

How to Take Apple Cider Vinegar To Lose Weight

According to the study about using the apple cider vinegar diet to lose weight and body fat, you should:

  • Start by adding 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water and drink it once a day to encourage weight loss. Then, increase the amount of vinegar per serving, and the frequency of drinking to encourage fat loss.
  • According to the research on apple cider vinegar and weight loss, you should consume a daily amount of 2 tablespoons of vinegar mixed with a cup of water to increase fat loss and weight loss.

If you are not used to the taste and effects of apple cider vinegar, you might want to include it into your diet gradually.

Apple cider vinegar is very acidic, so you need to dilute it to protect your teeth, throat and the lining of your stomach. Don’t drink undiluted ACV as it can do more harm than good. You can also drink the apple cider vinegar water with a straw to protect your tooth enamel.

Do You Need to Add Honey to the Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss Water?

Some find the taste of vinegar difficult to stomach. To improve the flavor of the ACV weight loss drink, you can add a bit of honey to your vinegar serving.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar in Your Diet to Lose Weight and Body Fat

Here are a few tips on how to include apple cider vinegar in your diet to promote weight loss:

Apple cider vinegar goes very well with some soups, especially in long-simmered bean soups or rich meat-based soups. Just remember to add the ACV to the soup once it has cooled down to prevent nutrient loss due to high heat.

You can also use ACV as a refreshing salad dressing with olive oil.

You can also use ACV for pickling vegetables, or you can simply mix it with water or herbal tea and drink it.

When and How Often Do You Need to Drink Apple Cider Vinegar Water for Weight Loss?

To kick start the metabolism and influence the feeling of fullness, some believe that it’s best to drink apple cider vinegar water about an hour before your meal to improve digestion and help you lose more weight.

Some also suggest drinking apple cider vinegar water first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, to boost the metabolism. However some people don’t like drinking ACV on an empty stomach, and others prefer to drink it after eating.

Whatever is suitable for you, you can consume it 2 – 3 times a day but don’t exceed the recommended amount of about 2 tablespoons per day. If you feel any burning sensation in your stomach or nausea, you can reduce the amount of ACV or try not to drink it on an empty stomach.

Some people also recommend taking a break every now and then from consuming ACV to give your body a break so they take a week or two off after every few months.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Consumption for Weight Loss Has Side Effects?

Apple cider vinegar is generally safe to consume. However, as with all natural remedies and traditional treatments, there are some precautions you should take.

What is the maximum amount of ACV consumption?

Consumption of too much ACV can cause low potassium levels and may lead to osteoporosis. However, this was reported in a woman who was drinking around 8 oz. apple cider vinegar a day for several years. The amounts that are recommended in this article (1-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day diluted in water) are safe for general consumption.

Can you drink ACV by itself?

You should always dilute apple cider vinegar. It is very acidic and can burn the tissues in your mouth and throat so always dilute the ACV with water. As I mentioned previously, acidic foods such as ACV can weaken tooth enamel. To prevent this happening, rinse your mouth with a glass of water after drinking a glass of diluted ACV or drink it with a straw. It’s also a good idea to avoid brushing your teeth immediately after you drink the apple cider vinegar weight loss water.

Does Consumption of ACV interfere with medications?

The Top 20 Essential Oils to Relieve Pain and Inflammation (Research Based)

Essential oils have been used for centuries to relieve pain and inflammation. Many essential oils have similar, and sometimes more effective, pain-relieving properties than many pharmaceutical analgesics.

There are many benefits to using essential oils to get relief from pain and inflammation. For example, essential oils have fewer side effects than many modern drugs and they also help to soothe your mind and make you feel more relaxed. So, essential oils play an important role in pain management and in treating many inflammatory conditions.

If you suffer from chronic pain associated with arthritis, lower back pain, migraines, fibromyalgia, nerve pain or sciatica, then essential oils are excellent home remedies to treat the pain. For example, lavender essential oil has both a calming effect on the mind and helps to relieve pain in inflamed joints. Also lavender is a great oil to relieve headaches as well as treating back pain and symptoms of fibromyalgia. Chamomile essential oil helps to reduce inflammation and can be massaged into painful joints in the case of arthritis or relieve stomach cramps.

At the end of the article, you will find out how to use essential oils for pain relief and also some precautions that you should take. First of all, let’s look at the best essential oils for getting rid of pain and inflammation.

Best Essential Oils to Treat Pain and Inflammation

1.    Chamomile oil to reduce inflammation and pain

Chamomile oil is a great essential oil with analgesic properties which can soothe the pain in inflamed joints and muscles. The calming effect of chamomile can also help get relief from headaches, sore muscles and nerve pain like sciatica and slipped discs. Chamomile also has a soothing effect on the digestive system and can help to relieve pain caused by excess gas and stomach cramping.

A review of the medicinal properties of chamomile found that the plant contains flavonoids which have anti-inflammatory properties. These inflammation-reducing compounds easily penetrate the skin’s surface to reduce inflammation. The review also found that chamomile is effective in treating digestive disorders and relaxing the muscles in the intestines.1

Among the ailments that chamomile oil act as an effective pain reliever are: rheumatic pain, muscle spasms, hemorrhoids, stomach ulcers, mouth ulcers, eczema, back pain, and stomach cramps.

To use chamomile oil for pain relief, add a few drops of the essential oil to a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, olive oil or sweet almond oil and massage the sore muscle or the painful joint. You can also add a few drops of chamomile essential oil to your diffuser. Inhale the therapeutic vapors deeply for around 15 minutes until your headache or migraine pain has eased or gone away completely.

2.    Lavender oil for pain relief

Lavender is undoubtedly one of the most popular and well-known essential oils for pain relief. Natural treatments using lavender have been used for centuries to relieve migraines and headaches. Lavender contains compounds that act as a mild sedative which reduces stress and anxiety. So, lavender essential oil can help get rid of tension headaches at the source. Lavender is also one of the best essential oils for muscle pain.

A study in 2015 found that lavender oil also contains anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In clinical trials, the researchers found that applying lavender oil topically for pain relief was just as effective as some pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories and analgesics.2

Another study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that applying lavender oil or inhaling it has a pain-relieving effect. For example, massaging lavender oil helps to relieve menstrual cramps when massaged into the abdominal area. Inhaling lavender also had a morphine-like effect in patients recovering from surgery. The study also found that lavender was effective in reducing migraine pain and relieving lower back pain and neck pain.3

To use lavender oil for pain relief, add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your diffuser. Inhale the therapeutic vapors deeply for around 15 minutes until your headache or migraine pain has eased or gone away completely.

Alternatively, rub 1 to 2 drops of lavender essential oil into the palms of your hands. Cup them over your nose and take 4-6 deep and slow breaths to fight acute migraine. Another thing you can do is add 2 to 4 drops of lavender oil on a cotton ball and secure in a zip lock bag to take with you. This will allow you to inhale lavender for headache relief as you go about your daily activities.

Unlike other essential oils which should be mixed with a carrier oil before using on the skin, lavender oil is mild enough to be placed directly on small areas of the skin without being diluted. However if you have a sensitive skin, or use lavender oil on a larger area of your skin, it is best to dilute it.

3.    Sweet marjoram

Sweet marjoram essential oil has sedative and anti-inflammatory properties to relieve various types of pain. Doctors from WebMD report that marjoram oil is used to alleviate headaches, migraines, neuralgia (nerve pain), stomach cramps and other intestinal disorders.4

One study showed that marjoram oil can be useful in getting rid of chronic neck pain. In the study, a combination of 4 essential oils was used: marjoram, black pepper, lavender, and peppermint. The essential oil remedy was rubbed into the painful area daily for 4 weeks. The patients using the remedy showed significant improvement when compared to the other group using the placebo cream.5

Marjoram is also a good essential oil to relieve toothache if you place a drop or two directly on and around the sore tooth. If you find it too potent, mix the sweet marjoram oil with a half teaspoon of olive oil and use a cotton ball or your finger to access the painful tooth.

4.    Eucalyptus essential oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is a powerful pain reliever to help get rid of nerve-related pain and the discomfort caused by blocked sinuses. Even a small amount of eucalyptus oil is enough to relieve headaches, arthritis, muscle and joint pains. The pain-reducing properties of eucalyptus essential oil are due to the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial compounds in the oil.

A clinical trial into using eucalyptus essential oil for pain relief found that inhaling eucalyptus oil can help to relieve post-surgery pain. In the trial, researchers found that patients who received eucalyptus oil after surgery experienced less pain and lower blood pressure levels.6

If you have sinus pain because of a cold, flu, or other respiratory infections, the University of Maryland recommends inhaling eucalyptus essential oil to help unblock sinuses and relieve the pain. They also report that ointments containing eucalyptus oil are effective for treating joint and muscle pain.7

5.    Peppermint essential oil

The antispasmodic properties of peppermint essential oil make it a great natural remedy to treat arthritis and intestinal problems. As well as helping to relieve arthritic pain, peppermint oil is also antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and kills off fungal infections. Peppermint essential oil, like eucalyptus oil, is a natural decongestant and can help to relieve painful blocked sinuses.

Peppermint essential oil is refreshing and cooling and contains a significant amount of menthol. Amongst its many uses, menthol is known to help relax and ease tension headaches and muscular aches and pains.

A study in Germany found that peppermint oil is just as effective as paracetamol when used to treat tension headaches. People who suffered from regular tension headaches applied peppermint oil to their forehead and temples every 15 minutes. The study showed that peppermint oil can help to relieve regular headaches without the side effects of frequently taking pain-killers.8

Peppermint essential oil also has an antispasmodic effect when ingested. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules relieve intestinal pain associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). One study reported that “peppermint oil is a safe and effective short-term treatment for IBS.”9

6.    Rosemary essential oil

The analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of rosemary oil make this a great essential oil for chronic pain relief. The University of Maryland reports that rosemary can also help to improve blood circulation (which is important in pain management) and relieve muscle pain and spasms.10 In fact, rosemary essential oil has been approved by the German government for use in pain relief.

A study into the effectiveness of rosemary oil to reduce pain and inflammation was shown to boost the effect of popular pain relief medications. The study found that rosemary oil can be used topically as a painkiller on its own or it can be used together with analgesic drugs to help improve their effectiveness.11   

7.    Thyme

If you suffer from backache, muscles pains, or inflammation in joints, then thyme essential oil can help to provide you needed relief from acute or chronic pain. The anti-inflammatory properties of thyme essential oil easily penetrate the surface of the skin to reduce pain.

A study published in the Journal of Lipid Research found that a compound in thyme called carvacrol suppresses COX-2, an enzyme connected with inflammation. Many non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) also work to suppress COX-2 to kill off the pain. The researchers reported that the analgesic and inflammation-reducing properties of thyme oil have a use in the treatment of many diseases.12

Other studies have shown that the antispasmodic effect of thyme essential oil help reduce menstrual cramps and is as effective as ibuprofen.13  

8.    Clary sage

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is an essential oil to relieve the pain of muscle cramps and menstrual pain. The analgesic effect of clary sage is due to molecules in the oil that have pain-relief properties.

The website Examine.com reported on a study involving women who experienced higher than average menstrual pain. A massage oil using a combination of lavender, clary sage, and rose oil was massaged daily to the abdominal area. After one or 2 days, the women reported a significant reduction in painful menstrual symptoms.14

The journal Phytotherapy Research found that salvia species extracts also have a calming effect on your mind as well as analgesic and muscle relaxant properties.15

Clary sage essential oil can also help to get relief from pain associated with abdominal cramping.

9.    Sandalwood

Sandalwood is an essential oil to fight inflammation and joint pain. The essential oil of sandalwood also helps to relax muscles and prevent muscle spasms.

Another way that sandalwood helps to manage pain is by sedating the nervous system. A study in the journal Planta Medica found that inhaling sandalwood essential oil has a relaxing effect and reduces the production of adrenaline.16 Another study found that sandalwood oil has an anti-inflammatory effect similar to that of ibuprofen and other NSAIDs.17

Sandalwood essential oil can be mixed with a carrier oil to make a pain-killing ointment for sore muscles, knee pain, and rheumatic conditions. Or, you can add a few drops to your diffuser to inhale to get relief from headaches, migraines, anxiety, and stress.

10. Juniper

Massaging juniper essential oil is an excellent way to relieve stiffness and pain associated with arthritis, rheumatism, and gout. Doctors at WebMD report that people take juniper oil to numb pain and treat painful muscles and joints.18

The website Enclyopedia.com says that there are many ways you can use juniper essential oil to relieve pain. You can add some to a bath and soak in it to relieve muscle pain. Or you can get rid of the painful symptoms of gout and rheumatoid arthritis by applying a juniper berry compress on the painful joint. Of course, you can also mix juniper oil with a carrier oil to make a natural pain-relieving ointment.19

11. Ginger

Ginger essential oil can alleviate joint pain and ease muscle stiffness. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of ginger are due to a compound called gingerol. Ginger oil is effective for pain relief when massaged into sore joints or painful muscles.

A review of the therapeutic properties of ginger found that it’s a natural remedy for rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual cramps, joint inflammation, and osteoarthritis. The review also found that ginger has a similar pain-relieving effect as NSAIDs like ibuprofen.20

12. Frankincense

Another essential oil which has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties is frankincense essential oil. Frankincense also reduces muscle tension by helping you to relax and reduce stress.

Frankincense oil can be combined with a carrier oil to rub into joints for effective pain relief. The Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 2016 published a study showing how frankincense has pain-reducing qualities. The oil works to block COX-2 (an enzyme connected with inflammation) and “exhibits significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.”21

13. Yarrow

Yarrow is a medicinal herb and its essential oil helps to relieve intestinal cramping and rheumatic pain. Teas made from yarrow contain properties that reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and can treat abdominal pain. The oil can also be used topically on inflamed joints to increase movement and reduce symptoms of arthritis and rheumatic pain.

The DARU Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences reported that yarrow is also useful in treating painful conditions like gout, eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, and other inflammatory skin conditions.22

14. Wintergreen

Use wintergreen essential oil to treat chronic lower back pain, muscles aches, and ease stiff joints. Wintergreen has been used for centuries for pain management and has pain-relieving properties similar to aspirin.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that wintergreen can provide amazing pain relief from lower back pain. The researchers found that massage oil with 2.5% wintergreen oil had the same effect as 325 mg aspirin when massaged into the lower back.23 The benefit of using wintergreen essential oil as a pain killer is that it is a safe treatment with no harmful side effects.

15. Vetiver

Vetiver is a little-known medicinal plant that isn’t widely known in Western countries. The soothing effect of vetiver essential oil calms all sorts of inflammation and is particularly good at providing relief from inflammation in both the circulatory and nervous system. It brings relief to general aches and pains, especially for rheumatism, arthritis and muscular pain and headache.

Doctors from WebMD say that vetiver oil is used topically for relieving stress, joint pain, and muscle pain.24

16. Helichrysum

Helichrysum essential oil is a powerful pain reliever that can also help to repair damaged skin. Helichrysum essential oil is anti-inflammatory and analgesic and can help manage many chronic pain conditions as well as nerve pain. You can also apply helichrysum oil directly to an injury to reduce muscle pain and prevent bruising.

The Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology found that the pain-relieving power of helichrysum works in 3 ways. Helichrysum reduces inflammatory enzymes, kills off free radicals, and reduces swelling.25

You can also apply helichrysum essential oil as an after-sun treatment to get relief from sunburn pain and prevent further skin damage.

Application of helichrysum can be done by using a few drops mixed with a carrier oil and massaging it into the painful area.

17. Black pepper oil

The oil extracted from black pepper can be used to relieve muscle aches and pains. The potent essential oil helps to increase blood circulation to the painful area, reduce inflammation, and is also antibacterial.

Black pepper essential oil can help eliminate neck pain and shoulder aches. It has been used together with marjoram, lavender, and peppermint oil to treat recurrent pain in the neck and shoulder areas.5

18. Lemongrass

The refreshing scent of lemongrass essential oil not only helps to boost your mood, but it can reduce the symptoms of inflammatory painful conditions like arthritis and rheumatism. You can also use the healing power of lemongrass essential oil for sore muscles.

The journal Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids found that lemongrass inhibits inflammatory responses in the body. It does this similar to thyme and frankincense essential oils by blocking the COX-2 enzyme.26

19. Rose geranium

Rose geranium essential oil can help to relieve knee pain, muscle aches, and back pain. You can also use rose geranium essential oil to get pain relief from shingles and other nerve-related painful conditions.

A study from 2013 found that rose geranium essential oil can be a good and safer alternative to many anti-inflammatory drugs. The results of the study were that rose geranium has a similar effect to some anti-arthritis and anti-rheumatic drugs. It also reduces inflammatory responses in the skin, and is a great essential oil for neuralgia.27

20. Bergamot

Bergamot essential oil is usually associated with Earl Gray tea. However, you can use bergamot essential oil to relieve headaches and reduce stress-related anxiety.

A study into the calming effect of bergamot found that, when inhaled, it released certain hormones which reduce the sensitivity of your nerves to pain.28

So, if you have a headache, sprain or other types of pain for which you would usually take analgesic pain killers, then try rubbing some bergamot essential oil mixed with a carrier oil on the affected area.

Precautions When Using Essential Oils

Essentials oils are very potent and powerful. Therefore, generally, you should never apply them directly to the skin and they should always be diluted in a carrier oil.

In general, you should use up to 4 drops of essential oils for every tablespoon of carrier oil. You can mix different essential oils together as long as you keep to these proportions.

Also you should not use essential oils on pregnant women and young children unless directed otherwise by a certified aromatherapist or another medical professional.

How to Use Essential Oils for Pain Relief

There are many essential oils that provide relief from pain and inflammation. Some essential oils act as analgesics, which mean that they relieve pain. Other essential oils reduce inflammation and are excellent for treating pain associated with rheumatic and arthritic conditions. Many essential oils also help to relax muscles and calm the nerves under the skin. While you can use any of the above mentioned essential oils for pain relief on their own, it is also beneficial to blend some of them together for an even greater effect.

To make massage oil to apply essential oils for topical pain relief, you can dilute them in a carrier oil such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil or castor oil. Here are the benefits of using some of these carrier oils for pain and inflammation relief:

  • Coconut oil has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and can help to reduce pain and skin inflammation.29 It also helps the healing properties of essential oils to penetrate the skin deeper.
  • Jojoba oil is very close to sebum – the oily substance produced by the skin to protect it. Jojoba oil also helps to combat inflammation and keep your skin healthy.30 Studies have shown that jojoba oil also helps the skin to absorb topical drugs.31
  • Extra virgin olive oil helps to reduce pain and inflammatory responses in the skin.32
  • Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties. A study into the effect of ricinoleic acid in inflammation also discovered that it has properties similar to those found in capsaicin – a known natural pain relief remedy33. Capsaicin reduces pain by decreasing a chemical in the body which sends pain signals to the brain34.

More Ways to Use Essential Oils for Pain Relief and Inflammation

For headache – Blend 4 drops of essential oil with one tablespoon of a carrier oil and apply a small amount of the mixture to the temples and massage gently. Make sure to stay away from the eyes. Headache can also be relieved by inhaling the oil: sprinkle a few drops of the oil onto a cloth or tissue, or use an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer.

For sinus pain – Inhaling essential oils is a very simple way of alleviating sinus pain. Boil some water, pour it in a large bowl and add a few drops of the chosen essential oils. Put a towel over your head and lean over the steamy bowl to inhale the fragrance-full vapors. Do this for about 10 minutes, after which you can reheat the water and repeat.

Bath soak – Good to soothe tired, aching muscles, relieve arthritis and rheumatism. Put a few drops of essential oil in a hot bath (you can also add 1-2 cups of Epsom salt to enhance the effect). It’s a good idea to mix the essential oil drops in a small amount of carrier oil first and then add to the bath.

Massage oil for larger areas – Use about 10-12 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce (30 ml) of carrier oil and massage this oil blend into any painful body part.

Hot or cold compress – To make hot compress to relieve sore muscles or joint pain take about a pint of hot water, as warm as you can comfortably tolerate, and add a few drops of your selected essential oil to it. Soak a small towel and squeeze the excess water. Then place it over the painful area. Some people find that alternating between hot and cold compress helps to alleviate their pain. A cold compress is made exactly the same as the hot compress, but ice or refrigerated water is used instead of the hot water, and the compress is replaced when it has heated up to body temperature.

Turmeric Face Mask Recipe for Glowing Skin, Acne, Rosacea, Eczema and Dark Circles

Turmeric beauty masks have been used across Asia for centuries. They are known in Chinese and Indian traditions, and are an element of the Ayurvedic medicine. In south Asia, turmeric masks were an integral part of the bride’s wedding preparations, making her look spotless and glamorous on her big day.

Turmeric contains a phytochemical called curcumin, which can benefit the body, both inside and out. Turmeric is obviously one of the ingredients in the turmeric face mask recipe, but the mask also contains two other important ingredients with lots of benefits for your skin.

Before getting to the recipe itself let’s look in more detail at the health benefits of turmeric for skin.

Benefits of Turmeric for the Skin

Turmeric is an amazing herb with medicinal properties that also has skin-lightening properties to reverse the effects of hyperpigmentation. Turmeric contains curcumin which has many health benefits including being antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

Curcumin (the main compound in turmeric) is an effective ingredient to soothe skin irritations, treat burns and relieve the pain of sunburn. Curcumin can also help with the healing process of wounds and was even studied for its effect on skin cancer.

For example: the book “Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects” reported that topical application of turmeric was found to decrease the number and onset of skin tumors.

Studies into the potential of turmeric to treat uneven skin tone found that it is an effective skin lightening agent. Research has shown that curcumin has compounds that inhibit the production of melanin in the skin.

Other studies have shown that curcumin can help to speed up wound healing and relieve pain. A study published in the Journal of Molecular Histology said that a topical application of curcumin has beneficial effects and accelerates the healing of wounds caused by burns.

Turmeric mask also works for acne, eczema and psoriasis. It reduces inflammation and facial redness, and promotes skin healing. Due to turmeric’s antioxidant properties, it has been used for skin rejuvenation. It helps softening lines and wrinkles, giving the face a more youthful appearance. It is also effective with rosacea – a chronic skin condition that is characterized by redness and pimples. It eases the redness and treats this disease.

The journal Phytotherapy Research examined many studies into curcumin for skin health and found that it can help to alleviate the symptoms of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and acne. It commented that both oral and topical curcumin supplements offer therapeutic benefits for skin health. The research also showed the potential of turmeric to lighten skin tone and improve the appearance of dark skin patches. Researchers found that compounds in turmeric help to suppress melanin in skin cells and can be useful in products designed to lighten the skin.

The basic turmeric face mask is easy to make and acts as a moisturizer, exfoliator and reduces redness. It brightens the skin and makes it look fresh and clean. This is also due to the other natural ingredients in this face mask: honey and plain yogurt (or milk).

Benefits of Honey for the Skin

Honey is one of the oldest foods known to man and it has been used for centuries, not only as a food source but also for its amazing medicinal properties. One of the many health benefits of honey is the way it can help treat acne, reduce the appearance of pimples, scars, blemishes and generally improve the skin appearance.

In my article about the top 10 honey face masks I explained what makes honey so beneficial for the skin based on research. One of the most important reasons why honey is beneficial for the skin is that it contains powerful antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It also has antioxidant properties which are important in helping to get rid of acne, blemishes and reduce sun spots and pimples. Antioxidants help to destroy free radicals which can harm the skin. They also protect the skin by not allowing toxins to cause damage.

Another bonus of applying honey to your skin is that honey is hygroscopic, which means that is a very effective skin moisturizer because it attracts and holds water molecules and at the same time dries out bacteria. Similarly to turmeric, the medicinal properties of honey make it an excellent way to help wounds heal quicker.

So, taking into account the amazing antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of natural raw honey, it comes as no surprise that it is one of the best natural ingredients to treat any type of skin problem.

It is important to point out that you should always use raw and preferably organic honey for treating skin conditions (as many types of honey sold in supermarkets are actually fake honey). This way you can make sure that it contains all the healing properties that your skin needs.

Benefits of Yogurt (or Milk) for the Skin

Many people use lotions containing lactic acid to soften dry, hard skin and reduce skin roughness. Plain yogurt is a natural source of lactic acid and it is great for your skin because it helps to cleanse the skin and lighten it without drying out your skin.

Milk also contains lactic acid which develops in cow’s milk as a result of bacteria breaking down the lactose. Fresh milk does not contain lactic acid, as the concentration of lactic acid builds up after a short period of time due to the input of bacteria.

A study from Taiwan found that products containing lactic acid have a skin lightening effect. As well as helping to affect the production of melanin, lactic acid also has an antibacterial effect on acne-causing bacteria. Other studies have shown that lactic acid and glycolic acid from milk help reduce the signs of hyperpigmentation.

Homemade Turmeric Facial Mask – Basic Recipe

There are many variations of the recipe, but below you will find the basic turmeric face mask recipe. Some people add chickpea flower to thicken the paste or add other ingredients that benefit the skin (see other recipes below).

Ingredients

1 teaspoon of turmeric
1 teaspoon of raw organic honey
1 teaspoon of natural yogurt (or milk)

Preparation

Put turmeric into a little bowl. Add honey and yogurt (or milk). You can adjust the amount of yogurt (or milk) to adjust the thickness of the turmeric mask, but make sure that it’s a firm paste that will stick to your face. Turmeric is a dye and it can stain anything, so you don’t want it dripping off your face.

Face preparation

Wash your face with running water and remove all makeup. If your hair is long, tie it up at the back. Wear a T-shirt you are not too attached to, in case it gets stained.

Application of the Turmeric Face Mask

Apply the turmeric mask evenly all over your face. A spot you don’t want to miss is under the eyes, as turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the dark circles, which form as a result of vasoconstriction (narrowing of the vessels).

If you have any mask leftover, you can save it in the fridge for a few days and use it the next time. The honey will usually harden in the fridge, so you can add a little bit of yogurt/milk to adjust the consistency of the paste and reapply to your face.

Let the mask dry on your face. This means leaving it on for about 20 minutes and then washing it off with cool water. Dry your face gently with a cloth.

Repeat the mask treatment over the course of a few days. You can also apply it to your face every few weeks, depending on your needs and complexion.

Optional Ingredients to Add to the Basic Turmeric Face Mask Recipe

As mentioned previously, there are many variations to this mask. Here are some of the common ingredients that can be added to the basic turmeric face mask:

Lemon juice – You can add to the basic recipe a few drops of lemon juice. Lemon juice contains vitamin C and citric acid, which naturally disinfect skin and remove excess oil. The natural acid gently exfoliates and cleanses oily skin, lightens the skin and leaving it toned and more even.

When researching natural ingredients that can be used as skin whitening agents, the International Journal of Molecular Sciences reported on the use of lemon juice. The researchers noted that lemon extracts are used in some skin lightening applications.

You need to be aware that lemon juice can dry the skin (it is one of the home remedies to treat oily skin). If you decide to use lemon juice, you may need to follow it with a moisturizer.

Tea tree oil – You can also add to the basic recipe a few drops of tea tree oil if you suffer from acne or pimples. In my article on how to use tea tree oil for acne I’ve mentioned studies showing that tea tree oil is antibacterial and kills off bacteria that cause pores to become infected. It has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the redness of inflamed pimples. Tea tree oil also helps to dry up excess sebum from the skin and helps to reduce acne symptoms.

Olive oil or avocado oil – If you have dry skin you can add to the basic mixture 1/2 to 1 tsp. of olive oil or avocado oil or any other natural oil such as sweet almond oil, or jojoba oil. These natural oils will further nourish your skin and moisturize it. They will help to protect the skin from irritants and infection, improve the appearance of dry skin, reduce signs of aging and repair damaged skin.

Does Turmeric Face Mask Stain the Skin?

Turmeric can temporarily stain the skin, especially if you have a fair skin tone or if you apply the mask for longer period of time.

If you want to reduce staining, you can do a sugar scrub with oil after rinsing the mask. To do this please mix equal amounts of fine sugar and natural oil, such as olive oil or almond oil and gently massage onto the skin on your face using circular motions. Rinse off with water.

It’s also a good idea to apply the turmeric mask later at night before going to sleep to allow several hours for the skin to get rid of the staining if you have one.

Can Turmeric Mask Cause Allergic Reaction?

Turmeric and honey can cause an allergic rash in some people which can result in one or more of these symptoms: hives, contact dermatitis, redness of the skin, raised welts on the skin, blisters, itchiness and swelling.

Make sure to apply the turmeric mask on a small skin patch on the first time you use it to make sure you don’t develop any skin irritation.

75 Extraordinary Uses for Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree (melaluca alternifolia) is native to Australia and using steam distillation, essential oil is extracted from its leaves and used as a natural health remedy. It is one of the most versatile and effective essential oils and it’s packed with a wide range of natural health benefits that puts it in a class of its own.

Tea Tree essential oil has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. It contains constituents called terpenoids and it is believed that these naturally occurring organic chemicals are the main reason for its healing properties. Terpenoids are used extensively for their aromatic qualities and they also play a role in traditional herbal remedies and are under investigation for their antibacterial and their pharmaceutical functions.

In this article I am going to share with you a MASSIVE list of 75 uses for tea tree oil. You may find it useful to refer to this list in the future so remember to bookmark this page, print it and share it with your friends (I have pin, like and email buttons directly above this post and now it’s a good time to use them).

A few words about dilution– while tea tree oil can be applied directly on a small area, such as on a pimple, if you have a sensitive skin, or if you need to apply it over a larger area, dilute it with base oil such as sweet almond, jojoba, grapeseed oil, coconut oil and the like.

Another precaution – don’t swallow tea tree oil as it is toxic when taken by mouth.

Here are 75 reasons to stock up tea tree oil in your medicine cupboard:

1. Abrasions & Minor Cuts: Make sure the area is clean, then apply several drops of the oil onto the affected area. If your skin is sensitive, dilute the tea tree oil with a tablespoon of base oil. If a bandage is required, put a few drops of the oil into a cotton ball, then place it on the wound and put a bandage on top.

2. Acne: Tea tree oil can be applied directly to pimples with a cotton swab for an effective and natural acne treatment. Leave for a few hours or overnight. If you find that pure, undiluted tea tree oil is a little too harsh or drying on your skin, simply mix a couple of drops of tea tree oil into a few teaspoons of aloe vera gel or carrier oil or honey and apply directly onto the pimple you wish to get rid of.  You can also mix a few drops of the oil with your regular face wash. 3. Air Freshener: Add a few drops to your diffuser and diffuse throughout the day or soak cotton balls in tea tree oil and keep them stored in a container, so when gross smells occur from cooking or general odor in a household, you can then take out the cotton balls and place in the center of the room or house, (like you would with potpourri) and then the tea tree will naturally counteract the odor and freshen the air. 4. Allergies: To treat allergies naturally, massage diluted tea tree oil onto the chest, abdomen or the reflex points of the feet. Find here more 5 essential oils to treat allergies.

5. Arthritis: To ease the pain that occurs with the swelling of arthritis, add 20 drops of tea tree oil to two ounces of grapeseed or other carrier oil of your choice. Then massage onto the affected area two to three times daily. Find here more essential oils to relieve pain.

6. Asthma: Add a few drops of oil to a pot of water and heat until boiling point on the stove. Once the water has boiled, take the pot off the heat and drape a towel over your head and lean over, placing your head over the pot and breathe in for a few minutes. 7. Athlete’s Foot: Clean feet thoroughly, paying particular attention to toes. Apply a light coating of tea tree oil to the affected area 2-3 times a day, and continue to apply it for two weeks after signs of the infection have disappeared to make sure the fungus is eradicated. If your skin is sensitive, add 10 drops oil to 1 tbsp of grapeseed oil or other carrier oil and massage into feet and between toes on a daily basis.

8. Baby Care: Keep your diaper pail squeaky clean and fresh by spraying it with tea tree oil mixed in with water. Many parents also report success with applying 5 drops tea tree oil mixed with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil for diaper rash.

9. Bacterial Infections: Massage the oil onto the affected area (dilute with base oil if your skin is sensitive) or add a few drops to a bath.

10. Bad Breath: Mix together one ounce water and one drop oil in a small cup, then swish the solution around your mouth for around 30 seconds. Do not swallow as tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth! Find here more natural ways to treat bad breath.

12. Blisters: Make sure the affected area is clean and then apply a drop or two of oil.

13. Boils: Place a warm washcloth onto the boil for a few minutes. Then apply a drop or two of oil to the affected area – the infection should then rise to the surface and be released.

14. Bronchitis: Use as instructed for asthma, then add five to ten drops to one ounce of carrier oil, and massage onto chest and throat two to three times a day. You can also try this herbal tea to relief cough and bronchitis.

15. Bruises: Apply an iced compress, (like bag of frozen vegetables covered in a dish cloth), then apply oil as instructed for Arthritis.

16. Bunions: Massage the affected area with five drops oil to one tbsp. of carrier oil.

17. Burns: Rinse the affected area with icy cold water for ten minutes. Then wait a few minutes before adding a mix of 5 drops oil with one tsp. raw honey, (Manuka honey is said to be particularly effective). 18. Calluses & Corns: Massage the affected area with five drops oil to one tbsp. of carrier oil. Repeat two times a day. Once the corn or calluses have softened, remove with a pair of tweezers, apply several drops of tea tree oil and cover with a bandage.

19. Canker Sores: Apply a drop or two of oil onto the infected area with a cotton swab dipped in tea tree oil, twice daily. Also, use as instructed for bad breath.

20. Carbuncles: Add a drop or two of oil to a cotton swab and apply straight to carbuncle. Repeat this twice a day.

21. Carpet cleaning – You can put a few drops of the above essential oils on the vacuum cleaner bag or filter for extra cleaning power and for additional great scent.

22. Chapped Lips: Add one drop of oil to lip balm or coconut oil. Use on your lips whenever they feel really dry, sore and cracked. Do not swallow as tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth!

23. Chicken Pox: Apply a drop of oil onto blisters. Allow to dry, then gently dust with corn starch. Repeat every four hours or until blisters heal completely.

24. Chigger Bites: Apply a drop of oil onto bites. It may sting, but think of it as a good hurt!

25. Cold Sores: Put a drop or two of oil onto a cotton swab and apply directly onto the cold sore. Re-apply two to three times a day.

26. Coughs: Follow instructions for bronchitis. To create a vapor, add 10 drops to a steamer and breathe in for five to ten minutes.

27. Dandruff: Add 10 drops of oil for every eight ounces of your existing shampoo in the bottle. Then shake the shampoo bottle to distribute the tea tree oil thoroughly. Rub the tea tree oil shampoo into your scalp and let sit for 5 minutes. Rinse with water, repeating once per day.

28. Dermatitis: Add 10 drops oil to one tbsp. of grapeseed or other carrier oil and massage into affected areas. Repeat this process two to three times a day.

29. Dry Skin: Add five drops oil to one tbsp of sweet almond oil. Gently massage into skin.

30. Earache and Infection: Add two to three drops of oil to two tablespoons of warm olive oil. Use a dropper to drip a small amount inside of the aching ear, while tilting head to one side. 33. Flea Bites: Apply one drop of oil directly onto bites to relieve the itch and encourage the healing process. This will sting! – But don’t be put off.

34. Flea collar for dogs – make a flea collar by putting a few drops of diluted tea tree on the dog’s collar on a weekly basis. There are several caution notes you must be aware of: Never use essential oils on cats.

36. Gum Disease: Make your own mouthwash with purified water, one drop of peppermint oil and one drop of tea tree oil. Then swish around your mouth, for 30 seconds, two to three times a day. 37. Head Lice: Add 20 drops of oil to two tbsp. shampoo. Massage into scalp and hair, and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse off shampoo. Repeat three to four times a day, until eggs have disappeared.

38. Hives: Add 10 drops of oil to four tbsp. of witch hazel. Apply with cotton ball. Alternatively, combine with coconut oil (which has natural healing properties and soothes the skin) and gently apply to the infected areas.

39. Homemade Mouthwash: Make your own mouthwash by mixing purified water with a few drops of tea tree oil. Do not swallow as tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth!

40. Household Cleaning: Tea tree oil can be added to your own homemade cleaners to get rid of germs and to sanitize surfaces.  You can make a tea tree cleaner by mixing two teaspoons of tea tree oil with two cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake vigorously to mix it up and use for household cleaning.  This solution works especially well in bathrooms and toilets. 42. Infected Wounds: Add oil to steaming water and place the infected area over the steam. Alternatively, combine one drop of tea tree with one cup of water and pour over the infected area one to two times daily, until healing occurs, or spray from a bottle of water with a few drops of oil.

43. Inflammation: Massage over the inflamed areas, towards the direction of the heart, or diffuse the tea tree oil and breathe it in.

44. Ingrown Hairs: Put one to two drops of oil onto the ingrown hairs. Repeat every two hours or until infection caused by ingrown hair goes away.

45. Insect Repellent: Add 15 drops to a quarter cup of water and use over the body as an insect repellent.

46. Jock Itch: Apply 10-15 drops of oil to two tbsp. of carrier oil. Apply twice a day and gently rub corn starch over the affected area to help with chapping.

47. Laryngitis: Add 5-10 drops of oil and pinch of sea salt to one cup of warm water, gargle two to three times daily – But do not swallow as tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth!

48. Laundry Helper: Add one to two teaspoons of tea tree oil to your laundry to help prevent mold.

49. Mildew and Mold Remover: Combine two teaspoons of tea tree oil with two cups of water to create an all-purpose cleaner to treat mold and mildew. Shake bottle well before use. Spray on the affected surface and let it dry. Don’t rinse.

51. Muscle Aches and Pains: Put 10-15 drops of oil into a warm bath along with half a cup of Epsom salts, and allow to dissolve. After you have bathed, combine 10 drops of oil with two tbsp. of carrier oil and massage.

52. Mumps: Massage over the body feet, and diffuse the oil throughout your home.

53. Nail Fungus: Paint the oil on the affected nails twice a day for at least two months. The nail has to grow out for the fungus to be eradicated, so you may not see results for a several months. Find here more natural treatments for toenail fungus.

54. Pest Control: Household bugs, such as ants do not like tea tree oil, so putting several drops at the doorway can act as a deterrent. 58. Rubella:  Mix tea tree oil with carrier oil and massage into the affected areas. Control the spread of infection by diffusing tea tree oil, lemon oil and lavender oil.

59. Scabies: Apply one to two drops of oil onto the affected area at morning and at night.

61. Seborrhea: For skin: Mix 10 drops oil with one tbsp. of carrier oil and massage onto the area. Repeat two to three times a day. For the scalp: Mix 10 drops of oil with two tbsp. shampoo. Massage into scalp and hair, leave on your head for 10 minutes and rinse. Repeat three to four times a day. Bath: Put 10-15 drops of oil into the bath.

62. Shingles: Put 10-15 drops of oil in a bath along with a half cup of Epsom salts, and dissolve. Alternatively mix 10 drops of oil to two tablespoons of grapeseed oil or coconut oil and massage.

64. Sore Throat: Mix two drops of oil with one cup of warm water and a pinch of sea salt, gargle two to three times a day – But do not swallow as tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth!

65. Staph Infection: Rub into the soles of the feet to boost immune response and combat infection.

67. Sunburn: Mix one tablespoon of coconut oil with one drop of tea tree and one drop of lavender oil and then apply carefully to sunburn.

68. Tattoos: Apply after getting a tattoo to reduce chances of getting an infection. Dilute with coconut oil or other carrier oil. You can also spray the oil on with purified water.

69. Thrush: Mix sea salt, warm water and one drop of tea tree oil, and gargle – Do not swallow as tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth!

70. Ticks: If you were bitten by a tick, place a few drops of tea tree oil on cotton ball and hold it over the tick for at least 1 minute. Then remove the tick with tweezers and apply another drop of the oil on the bite to prevent infection.

71. Toothbrush Cleaner: Put a few drops of oil onto toothbrush one to two times weekly to kill bacteria.

72. Tonsillitis:  Add a few drops of tea tree oil into steaming water, put a towel over your head and bend over the bowl of water to inhale. Then gargle the solution (do not swallow as tea tree oil is toxic when taken by mouth!) and massage into neck and soles of feet.

73. Vaginal Infection: Add a few drops to your bath. You can also coat a tampon with diluted tea tree oil – start from no more than one or two drops in one tablespoon of carrier oil. Coat the tampon and insert. If there is any irritation stop using the oil and wash the area with clean, warm water. Use the coated tampon for at least a day after all symptoms are gone. 74. Viral Infections: Diffuse tea tree oil throughout your home. Alternatively inhale from hot, steaming water.

MCH Blood Test: What Do MCH Levels in Blood Mean? (Evidence Based)

MCH blood test is usually done as part of a complete blood count (CBC) test that doctors use to check your general health. MCH stands for mean corpuscular hemoglobin and is the amount of hemoglobin in your red blood cells. Some of the causes of abnormal MCH levels are iron deficiency, lack of vitamin B12, thyroid issues, or issues with your liver function.

Normal MCH levels mean that your body is producing enough hemoglobin. This also means that there are no underlying medical conditions that are causing hemoglobin to get destroyed too quickly.

Having low levels of hemoglobin or high levels can tell if you have different types of anemia. If your CBC blood test shows that you have anemia and abnormal MCH levels, you might also feel fatigued, have a rapid heartbeat, palpitations, and difficulty concentrating.

This article looks at what your MCH blood test means and what it tells about your health. You will also find out what to do if you have low mean corpuscular hemoglobin levels (low MCH).

What is MCH Blood Test?

Hemoglobin is an important molecule in your red blood cells that helps to carry oxygen to body tissues. The MCH is a calculation of the average amount of hemoglobin inside a single red blood cell.

The only way that doctors can test MCH levels in a lab test is to use it as part of a complete blood count (CBC). Dr. Brian Yang Merritt on Medscape says that MCH results are derived from measuring the concentration of hemoglobin in your red blood cell count (RBC).1

The MCH blood test is also related to the MCHC blood test which measures the concentration of hemoglobin in a given volume of red blood cells. Together, the MCH and MCHC indices are used to help doctors determine the cause of certain medical conditions.

What is CBC blood test?

A CBC (complete blood count) is a panel of tests that evaluates the three types of cells that circulate in the blood:

  • White blood cells
  • Red blood cells
  • Platelets

According to doctors from the Mayo Clinic, the CBC blood test is used to assess your general health. The CBC can then be used by doctors to diagnose a variety of disorders including infections, anemia, and leukemia. The CBC tests for abnormalities in red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, plasma, and platelets.2

What Are Normal MCH Levels?

According to the book Clinical Methods in the chapter “Red Cell Indices,” normal MCH levels are 29 ± 2 picograms (pg) per red blood cell in adults. This figure along with calculating the size of red blood cells (MCV) and the concentration of hemoglobin (MCHC) give doctors an idea of your general health.3

What are the Symptoms of low MCH Levels?

If your MCH levels drop temporarily, you may not have any symptoms. However if low MCH levels persist, you may have these symptoms of low MCH:

  • Weakness
  • Constant fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Pale skin

These low MCH symptoms are similar to the symptoms of anemia. Checking for normal MCH levels is an important step in looking for signs of anemia. Even if you have enough red blood cells, you could still be anemic if you don’t have enough hemoglobin in each cell. Anemia can cause extreme fatigue, pale skin with no color, shortness of breath, chest pain, and cold hands and feet.

What Causes Low MCH Levels?

Some of the conditions that can cause low MCH levels are iron deficiency anemia, microcytic anemia, vitamin deficiencies, celiac disease, and gastric surgery.

Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that to produce enough red blood cells with enough hemoglobin, your body needs iron, vitamin B-12, folate, and other nutrients. If your body is lacking these nutrients or red blood cells are getting destroyed too quickly, the result will be low MCH levels.5

Iron deficiency anemia and low MCH levels

Your lab test results could show lower than normal MCH if you don’t get enough iron in your diet which results in iron deficiency anemia.

Iron deficiency anemia is a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Without enough iron, your body can’t produce enough hemoglobin that enables the red blood cells to carry oxygen. As a result, iron deficiency anemia can leave you tired and short of breath.

Dr. Stanley Schrier says that having an iron deficiency will cause low MCH and MCHC levels. This can result in fewer red blood cells in your body and cause you to suffer from the symptoms of anemia.6

Celiac disease causes low MCH levels

Celiac disease can cause low MCH levels in a blood test result because the condition prevents iron being absorbed into the body.

According to the Indian Journal of Pediatrics, iron deficiencies are commonly found in people with celiac disease. To address the iron deficiency in celiac patients, doctors put patients on a strict gluten-free diet and provide them with iron supplements. This helped to reduce the symptoms of celiac disease and boost hemoglobin levels in the blood.7

There are other symptoms of being sensitive to gluten in products. Some of these are joint pain, digestive issues like greasy stool, tingling sensations in your body, and inflammatory skin disorders.

Gastric surgery

If you have had gastric surgery, you might find that your blood test results show low MCH levels.

Like with celiac disease, gastric surgery can hinder how much iron the body can absorb. The journal BioMed Research International reported on the connection between anemia and gastric bypass surgery. It was found that infections, chronic diseases, and aging can cause inflammation and promote anemia in people who’ve had gastric surgery.8

Thyroid dysfunction and MCH levels

Thyroid dysfunction can cause low or high MCH levels.

According to the journal Polish Archives of International Medicine, different forms of anemia can develop from thyroid dysfunction. Both hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can cause abnormalities in MCH levels.9

However, it is unclear if thyroid dysfunction always causes low MCH or high MCH levels. For example, the Iranian Journal of Pediatric Hematology Oncology reported that both MCH and MCHC levels were lower in people with overactive and underactive thyroids.10

On the other hand, studies published by the European Journal of Endocrinology found that MCH levels were increased with both types of thyroid disorder.11

If your doctor suspects you have a thyroid issue, they will test your blood specifically for thyroid hormone to test if you have a thyroid disorder.

Treatment for Low MCH Levels and How to Increase MCH

If your low MCH level is caused by anemia, it’s important to increase your iron intake to improve your blood work.

Eat more iron-rich foods to increase MCH

The best way to increase iron levels in your blood and bring your MCH readings up to normal levels is to consume more iron-rich foods.

According to Dr. Christine Mikstas on WebMD, some of the best dietary sources of iron that are easily absorbed by the body are beef or chicken liver, oysters, cooked beef, and canned sardines in oil.

There are also plenty of vegetable and plant-based sources of iron. Some of the best sources include cooked beans, tofu, pumpkin seeds or sesame seeds. Also, kidney beans, dried apricots, and iron-enriched foods can help to increase your iron intake and prevent anemia.

Take iron supplements to treat anemia

Another way to increase MCH and MCHC levels in your blood is to take iron supplements to treat anemia.

Although it is always best to get your vitamins and minerals from dietary sources, sometimes iron supplements are needed to treat anemia.

The American Journal of Medicine reports that adults need around 20mg of iron daily. If a person has had gastric surgery or suffers from celiac disease, doctors may recommend taking more iron. The report also noted that a person should take vitamin C as this helps to increase iron absorption. If you have anemia, you should avoid drinking tea for at least an hour after eating as tea hinders iron absorption.14

Cook with iron cookware

If you need to increase iron levels in your blood, you should switch to cooking with iron cookware. Doctors from the Mayo Clinic recommend cooking with iron pots and pans to get more iron into your diet.15

Cooking with iron cookware will help to avoid the dangers associated with cooking with aluminum.

What are the Symptoms of High MCH Levels?

Because high MCH levels can also cause symptoms of anemia, they are usually similar to having low MCH levels. Some of the symptoms of high MCH include extreme fatigue, pale skin with no color, shortness of breath, chest pain, and cold hands and feet.

What Causes High MCH Levels?

Here are some of the main causes elevated MCH:

Liver disease and high MCH Levels

High MCH levels many make doctors examine your liver function to check that there is no liver disease.

High MCH levels can cause macrocytic anemia and this is associated with liver dysfunction. According to the journal Management of Anemia, different types of anemia are associated with liver disease. Gastrointestinal problems associated with liver disease can also result in poor iron absorption from your diet.12

Vitamin B12 deficiency causes higher than normal MCH

A vitamin B12 deficiency can be a reason for blood test results to show higher than normal MCH levels.

The book Clinical Methods says that megaloblastic anemias are often caused by low levels of folate or vitamin B12.3

Vitamin B12 deficiencies are more common than most people realize. Therefore, it’s important to know the symptoms of low levels of vitamin B12. These can lead to depression, extreme fatigue, memory loss, difficulty sleeping, and mood swings.

Drinking too much alcohol and high MCH

Overindulgence in alcohol over many years can cause anemia and higher than normal levels of mean corpuscular hemoglobin in your red blood cells.

For example, Dr. Vincent Herrin on Medscape says that megaloblastic anemia is often associated with alcoholism, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies. Chronic alcohol use affects bone marrow production of red blood cells and causes symptoms associated with anemia. Usually, abstaining from alcohol for a few months will help MCH levels to normalize.13

Certain medications

According to the Journal of General Family Medical Practice, certain medications can cause folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies. In fact, some reports indicate that nearly 40% of patients with macrocytosis anemia have been taking medications that interferes with their hemoglobin levels.14 A macrocytosis anemia is an anemia in which the red blood cells (erythrocytes) are larger than their normal volume.

Treatment for High MCH Levels and How to Decrease MCH

If the lab test results for MCH show high levels, your doctor will carry out further tests to find the underlying cause.

If the elevated MCH levels are due to a liver dysfunction, it is important to avoid habits that can damage your liver. These include limiting alcohol consumption to safe levels, getting enough sleep, stopping smoking, and enjoying a balanced, nutritious diet. This will also help to prevent fatty liver disease.

The MCHC blood test is related to the mean corpuscular hemoglobin test (MCH), however, this checks for the concentration of hemoglobin in your red blood cells.

Bumps on Face: Causes, Treatments and When to See a Doctor

Bumps on the face can come in many shapes and sizes. Skin conditions like acne can cause red bumps that may have a pus-filled white center. Or, you may notice that little white bumps around your eyes or cheeks have appeared. Other types of facial bumps could look like a bumpy rash that isn’t acne with hard, flesh-colored bumps that won’t pop, or you may notice a dark mole appearing that needs to be examined by a dermatologist.

Noticing any kind of bump on your face can be a cause for concern, at least from a cosmetic point of view. A large red bump on your face will make you very self-conscious. Even just having clusters of tiny blackheads or whiteheads is enough to reach for concealer to cover up the unsightly spots.

The causes of bumps appearing on your face are many and varied. Having an oily complexion or too much sebum on your face can block pores that become infected and inflamed. Or, having an oily face could result in groups of blackheads on your nose, cheeks, or forehead. A viral infection could also cause sore bumps on your lips that ooze fluid before crusting over.

How can you get a clear complexion and get rid of bumps on your face? Should you try to pop bumps on your face to remove them?

In this article, you will learn about facial bumps and what to do to eradicate them from your face.

Symptoms of Bumps on Face

If the bumps on your face are caused by infected or blocked pores on your forehead, cheeks, chin or nose, you might have large red facial bumps. These can appear as just one or two pimples or you may have a cluster of inflamed and swollen red pores. These pustules may be tender to touch and become filled with pus.

Not all bumps that appear on your face are caused by acne and become red pimples that look unsightly. Shaving facial hair is one reason why many men get red sore bumps on their face.

Razors bumps (medical name: pseudofolliculitis barbae) are small red bumps that appear on shaved areas of the face. According to dermatologist Dr. Amanda Oakley, razor bumps occur when ingrown facial hairs cause inflammation when the hair has been shaved. This can cause a red bumpy rash that looks like acne on the cheeks, chin, and neck after shaving.1

Razor burns can cause an irritating red rash with tiny red bumps on the shaved facial area. The irritated skin can be tender to touch and start itching. Depending on the severity of razor burns, dead skin cells can also block pores and cause larger pus-filled pimples on your face.

Of course, razor bumps and razor burn can affect any shaved area of your body.

To help prevent razor bumps appearing, dermatologist Dr. Wendy Levinbook from Hartford Dermatology Associates recommends to always shave in the direction of the growing hair. You should also avoid shaving too closely and use as few shaving strokes as possible.2

These same principles apply if you shave your bikini area, armpits, or legs. Using the correct shaving techniques can help avoid ingrown hair and bumps.

Facial acne

Acne is a common reason for lots of red bumps on your face and can affect men and women alike.

Acne bumps on the face form when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. According to doctors from the Mayo Clinic, plugged hair follicles then become inflamed when bacteria cause an infection. This can result in raised red spots that have a white center and are sore to touch.3

To get rid of acne bumps, you should always resist the temptation to pop a pimple. If you squeeze an infected hair follicle too much, this could force the infection deeper into your skin and cause large painful cysts on your face.

Dr. Debra Jaliman on WebMD reports that whiteheads and blackheads are both a form of acne, however, they are not infected with bacteria.4

There are many ways you can get rid of whiteheads and blackheads. For example, facial steaming can help to unclog pores naturally and give you a brighter, clearer complexion.

Cold sores causing bumps on lips

Cold sores, or fever blisters, will cause sore bumps on your lips that blister and then crust over.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV-1) and can cause lip sores if you are under stress, have a weakened immune system, or have been exposed to strong sunlight.

According to Dr. Neha Pathak on WebMD, cold sores generally show up on the outside of your mouth and lips, although they can also appear in the nose. The first signs of a fever blister might be a tingling sensation. Then a cluster of blisters will form on your lip. They will ooze fluid and then form into a scab.5

One way to get rid of a cold sore bump on your lip naturally is to apply raw honey. The journal Medical Science Monitor reported on a study showing that raw, natural honey can act as a natural antiviral treatment. In fact, research has shown that raw honey for cold sores is just as effective as acyclovir, which is an antiviral medication commonly used to treat cold sores.6

All you need to do to get rid of cold sore bumps is to dab a little raw honey 3 to 4 times a day to help speed up the healing time and soothe discomfort the lip bump causes. The best honey to use is Manuka honey for its healing and antimicrobial properties.

Allergic reactions

An allergic reaction could cause bumps on your face and swelling around your eyes that may itch and make your eyes water.

Allergic reactions are a result of your immune system reacting to allergens. Dr. John Cunha on eMedicineHealth reports that allergic reactions can cause bumps on the face or neck. These bumps can show up on the eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat. Other associated symptoms of an allergic reaction are skin irritations or hives, shortness of breath, nausea and/or vomiting.7

Milia causes white bumps on face

Tiny white bumps on your face around your eyes that give your skin a bumpy appearance could be milia.

Milia are described as small, pearly-white bumps that are just under your skin’s surface. Specialist in dermatology, Dr. Monisha Gupta says that these bumps are formed by keratin, a skin protein. Milia often affect newborn babies. In adults, Dr. Gupta says that tiny white bumps are usually found around the cheeks, forehead, and eyelids.8

These hard, white bumps may look like whiteheads but they can’t be popped and are not itchy or painful. According to doctors from the Mayo Clinic, milia will usually go away on their own and medical treatment isn’t recommended.9

Xanthelasma

A yellowish bump around your eyelids that isn’t painful or itchy could be a sign of xanthelasma.

Doctors at the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology say that these bumps on your face are made up of cholesterol deposits. They are often associated with people who have liver disease or high cholesterol. Some reports say that these yellowish bumps around your eye could be a sign that you are at risk of coronary heart disease.10

According to Dr. Alan Kozarsky, xanthelasma bumps don’t go away on their own. If they are causing you distress, you should see to doctor to discuss options for removing them.11

Fordyce spots on the face

Fordyce spots appear as white bumps around the edges of the lips and are completely harmless.

Many people have Fordyce spots (sometimes called Fordyce granules) and they don’t cause any other symptoms. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology says that usually these tiny white bumps are seen on the border of the lips. However, you may also notice them in your lip or inside the lining of the cheeks.12

Other Types of Bumps That Can Appear on Face

There are other types of bumps and skin lesions that can show up on your face as well as other parts of your body:

Warts

Warts can appear as a bump on your face if you have been infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr. Stephanie Gardner on WebMD says that flat warts are more commonly found on the face. These have a smooth and flat appearance and not as large as other warts.13

Skin tags

Skin tags are common types of bumps on the face and other parts of the body. Dr. Gary Cole on MedicineNet says that skin tags are soft skin growths that are harmless but annoying.14

Moles

Moles are also a common skin growth that cause brown, black-colored or red bumps on your face or body. Moles can change in appearance over time. Dr. Stephanie Gardner on WebMD says that it’s important to be observant to any changes in the appearance and color of a mole. Some changes to a mole could be the start of skin cancer and it’s important to visit a dermatologist if you are concerned.15

Bug bites

A lump that quickly appears on your face and is itchy and red could be because of a bug bite or sting. Doctors from the National Health Service say that insect bites or stings can cause a small red lump on your skin. Bites on your face from mosquitoes and bed bugs can be a reason for itchy red lumps that are irritating.16

There are many natural home remedies that are great to soothe insect bites discomfort.

Natural Home Remedies to Get Rid of Bumps on Face

Let’s look at some natural ways to get rid of bumps on your face and help you get a more youthful complexion.

Sugar scrub

A sugar scrub can help to get rid of bumps on your face that are caused by razor bumps, blackheads or whiteheads.

A study published in the journal Cutis found that glycolic acid and help to reduce inflammation caused by razor bumps by 60%.17 Sugar cane and milk are natural sources of glycolic acid and can be combined to make a natural face mask.

How to make a sugar scrub for inflamed bumps:

It is very easy to make your own sugar scrub if you need to get rid of razor bumps and blackheads or whitehead pimples quickly. This is what you should do:

  1. Put 2 tablespoons organic, raw sugar into a blender or coffee grinder until you have a fine powder.
  2. Mix the sugar with 2 tablespoons raw honey and add the juice of half a lemon. Mix well.
  3. Apply the sugar scrub remedy to your face with gentle circular motions.
  4. Leave for 5-10 minutes and rinse off with warm water.
  5. Use 1-2 times a week to help prevent bumps on your face from shaving or pimple infections.

Baking soda and coconut oil

Another way to naturally exfoliate your face to prevent skin pores becoming clogged and infected is to use a baking soda and virgin coconut oil remedy.

The grainy texture of baking soda can help to lift ingrown hairs and remove dead skin cells, as well as generally improve your skin appearance. Virgin coconut oil also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to soothe skin and prevent infections.

How to use:

To make your own baking soda scrub at home to help remove bumps on your face, this is what you should do:

  1. Mix well 1 tablespoon baking soda with 2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil to make a thick paste.
  2. Gently massage the remedy onto the areas of your face where you have red bumps and leave for a few minutes.
  3. Rinse off with warm water.
  4. Use the natural scrub 1 or 2 times a week to help unclog pores and prevent sore red bumps on your face.

Tea tree oil for acne bumps on face

Tea tree oil is an effective natural remedy to clear up acne bumps or pimples on your face and prevent pores becoming infected.

For example, a research published in the Medical Journal of Australia found that tea tree oil is a natural acne treatment. Researchers found that the antimicrobial properties of tea tree oil help to get rid of inflamed pustules and pimples on the face caused by acne. In fact, tea tree oil was as effective as some pharmaceutical acne treatments but with fewer side effects.18

You can also use tea tree oil to treat mite bites or help get rid of a bed bug rash naturally.

How to use tea tree oil for getting rid of facial bumps:

You can use tea tree oil as a spot treatment on one or 2 large bumps or make a facial cleanser. This is what you should do:

  1. Mix 3-4 drops of tea tree oil with a tablespoon of a carrier oil.
  2. Using a cotton ball, gently apply the tea tree oil cleanser to patches of bumps on your face.
  3. Leave for 15-20 minutes and rinse off with warm water.
  4. Repeat 2 times a day and continue using until the infected bumps on your face have gone.

Witch hazel

How to use witch hazel:

To use witch hazel to remove small and larger bumps from your face that are caused by clogged pores, this is what you should do:

  1. Buy pure witch hazel (make sure it is alcohol-free).
  2. Mix 1 oz. witch hazel with 3 drops tea tree oil and 3 drops lavender essential oil.
  3. Apply the witch hazel remedy to the bumps on your face using a cotton ball.
  4. Repeat 1-2 times a day to help get rid of acne bumps, whiteheads, and blackheads.

Apple cider vinegar for facial bumps

You can use raw unprocessed apple cider vinegar as a natural remedy for facial bumps that are caused by inflammation or bacterial skin infections.

The benefits of using apple cider vinegar on your skin come from its high levels of acetic acid. For example, the journal Advances in Wound Care reported that acetic acid applications can help to kill off bacteria on the skin and soothe inflammation.20 Also, the Journal of Dermatology reported that acetic acid acts as a peeling agent that can help to rejuvenate the skin’s appearance.21

How to use apple cider vinegar on your face:

This is how to cleanse your face using apple cider vinegar to help reduce bumps on your face:

  1. Mix equal parts of water and raw apple cider vinegar.
  2. Dip a cotton ball to apply the natural remedy to sore bumps on your face.
  3. Leave to dry and then rinse with warm water.
  4. Repeat 2 times a day until you no longer have irritating bumps on your face.

The apple cider vinegar remedy may sting a little at first. This is normal. However, if it stings too much, try diluting the apple cider vinegar with more water.

  • You notice changes in the size, shape, or color of a mole or skin growth.
  • A bump on your face is red, tender, and bleeds easily.
  • A patch of skin on your face that looks like a scar and is firm to touch.
  • Bump that itches, bleeds, crusts over, and then repeats the cycle and has not healed in 3 weeks.
